My Great-Great-Grandmother: A Kimono Maker

Born during the Meiji era in Japan, my great-great-grandmother was known to be skilled in kimono making and other traditional arts. My grandmother often recalls watching her work and remembers, as a child, playfully rolling kimono fabric, mimicking the movements she observed during client fittings.

Her influence goes beyond just memories. Family members would frequently request special pieces when a particular fabric caught their eye, and a yukata she made for my mother has become one of my most cherished possessions. Her commitment to her craft has left a profound impact on our family, instilling in us a deep respect for Japanese artistry that continues to inspire us today.
