The Origin

Created by master weaver Kitagawa Ihei Tsuneyoshi at the order of Matsudaira Yorishige, the first Lord of the Takamatsu Domain. For centuries, this secret weave was closely guarded as a tribute to the shogunate.
Years of History

A technique passed down through six generations within a single family lineage. After the Meiji Restoration, the craft was entrusted to the Iwabu family, who continue to weave it in Kagawa to this day.

When working with a fabric of this lineage, there is a responsibility that comes with it, a balance between honoring what came before and creating something new for today.

Fabric Memories
A Red Hat in a Rose Garden
A personal story about the memory that first led us to Bota-ori, and the unexpected connection that brought it all together.
A name that means "lasting for many years"
Bota-ori is defined by its fine waffle-like texture. The fabric is created through a distinctive technique where three rows of plain weave are followed by a fourth floating thread, producing a subtly raised surface.
That texture traps air, keeping the fabric cool in summer and warm in winter. It was born out of practical need in Sanuki, a region known for its hot and humid climate.
There is something quietly special about a fabric that is both everyday and exceptional. That is Bota-ori.

We wanted to make the most of every piece of Bota-ori fabric, so we made a mat too. Each one is unique and will be sold as a one of a kind piece.
